SERVICES FAQ
Why are you currently not taking on regular clients (or being very selective in who you take on) and focusing on Phone/WhatsApp Consults?
My primary goal as a coach is to educate, in particular to facilitate my clients' capacities to learn on their own, as I feel that for many individuals, this can make the endeavor of bodybuilding a more life-giving, enriching and developmental experience than simply providing instructions at regular intervals, as "coaches" oftentimes do. Ultimately, over the long haul, I have come to believe that for many, learning to "Be Your Own Bodybuilding Coach" makes not only for a better bodybuilder and also fosters interpersonal development that translates to a greater sense of fulfillment, autonomy, and happiness, and perhaps even an enhanced ability to clear life's hurdles outside the realm of bodybuilding.
Thus, for most individuals, I prefer to encourage an honest genuine effort to solve, using the resources available to them, as many of their bodybuilding conundrums on their own as possible (or reasonable), before coming to me for assistance. Of course, doing so promotes personal growth, helps the individual come to know him / herself better, and makes for a much more enriching consultation when the time comes, as the remaining questions are detailed and specific, and my responses are received by a much more informed and fertile mind. To promote more productive consultations in this way, I suggest folks pick up my "Be Your Own Bodybuilding Coach" book beforehand, as many questions are already answered there in more detail than could be covered in a single consultation.
Financially speaking, phone consultations also are advantageous: Spending an hour or so on the phone with me every 1-2 months (or as needed) is cheaper than paying for regular check-ins where much of the interaction boils down to some degree of "telling you what you already know" (or even hand-holding in a worst case scenario). Phone / Skype consults are preceded by using my intake and consent form (which forms the core of the Personal Bodybuilding Inventory found in the BYOBB Coach book), which helps lay out the foundational information, delineate the goals / topics for our conversation (saving us time and helping me prepare), as well as provide (legal) informed consent for me to provide you with information.
What do I need to do beforehand in preparation for a consultation?
The starting point and most vital feature of my consultations is rooted in the client's ability to compose a set of well-delineated, explicit and where possible quantifiable questions and/or goals. This most often includes the components of a timeline and a quantifiable, specific, contextualized objective. For example, a well-defined goal might be, "To compete in ~1 year at Contest X (Location, Date, Division), weighing in under the Y weight class limit, where I just last month competed at 8lb below the weight cap." A well-delineated question might be, "Given the historical information provided in this intake form, what training, nutritional, supplement, lifestyle, recovery and/or other strategies might you suggest I employ to improve my weakest muscle groups (chest, hamstrings and calves) in the next 14 months (before I step on stage again, in the Z class, where I most recently weighed in 11 lb under the weight limit."
Please note: I can't effectively help my paying clients if they are unable to tell me specifically in what way I could help them. To wit, goals such as "Get as huge as possible" or "Learn as much as I can" don't provide us with working parameters or a concrete endpoint, and leave me with little to bring to a consultation other than hoping I can help you, the client, figure out what we should work on, which I'm ethically not willing to charge my going rate for. On the other hand, if setting up goals is the problem per se, this can be a target of a consultation. If, after providing me with a completed intake form (so I have the requisite information before we talk), a client is explicitly interested in delineating his / her path in (competitive) bodybuilding, e.g., sorting out what reasonable, attainable goals might be given health considerations, familial obligations, etc., I am more than willing to consult him / her in that regard.
